Graptolites were enigmatic marine creatures that thrived from the Cambrian to the Carboniferous periods, roughly 500 to 300 million years ago. These colonial animals left behind a rich fossil record, primarily comprising delicate, branching skeletons composed of chitin and resembling tiny writing (hence their name, from the Greek "graptos" meaning "written" and "lithos" meaning "stone")
